You’ve probably heard it before, meals connect us! When we celebrate, we eat. When we treat someone, we take them out for a meal. Even in business, a great deal often happens over dinner. So why not bring that same connection into your home with family meals?

Cook more at home. Make a grocery list and take your kids to the grocery store. Turn it into an adventure, maybe the list is a secret treasure map, with a little treat waiting at the end! Stick to the list, shop together, and then cook as a team. Sounds like a good plan, right?

And remember the most important part, eating together as a family. Make mealtime fun and engaging. Set a great example by growing your own food, even if it’s just a few herbs. Let the kids take care of watering them each evening. It teaches them where food comes from and makes them part of the process.

When it comes to optimizing family nutrition, here are a few simple tips:

  • Read Nutrition Facts labels. If you already do, great! If not, next time you shop, start comparing products. Look for shorter ingredient lists and less sugar or sodium.

  • Save money on fruits & veggies. If fresh produce is expensive or out of season, frozen options are a great alternative. Freezing locks in nutrients, so there’s no compromise!

  • Rethink sweet drinks. Juices, sodas, and flavored drinks are treats, not everyday staples. Help kids get used to drinking water. Infuse it with frozen strawberries or citrus slices for a fun twist!

  • Pack your own lunches & snacks. Skip the chips, candy, and ultra-processed foods, at least most of the time.

  • Go meatless once a week and add more whole grains to meals.

Most importantly, be the example. Kids learn by watching, so the best way to encourage healthy habits is to practice them yourself. Simple, intentional choices add up, leading to a happier, healthier family!
