Recently, I noticed a social media post from an accountant that looked more like a toddler’s arts and crafts project. All elements were competing and you had no idea where to look. Visual chaos we call that.
Said accountant could be absolutely excellent, but their design certainly did not reflect that.
First impressions count. People form an impression before they even read what’s written. If something looks confusing, people move on.
It’s not because people are trying to judge; it’s just how human brains are wired. The Reticular Activating System and Salience Network in the brain are constantly scanning the environment for clear signals that help us process information in a split second, and filtering out what doesn’t matter.
Most businesses don’t struggle because their service isn’t good. They struggle because the way they present their business doesn’t show the quality they offer.
Examples like:
A great restaurant with a menu that’s hard to read and printed on mis-matched paper.
A skilled trades-person with a logo that felt like a well-meaning friend helped out.
A professional clinic with marketing materials that look chaotic.
That doesn’t mean the business isn’t great. It just means the design isn’t telling their story accurately. It’s not aligned.
Good design guides the eye naturally. Short headlines, enough whitespace, easy-to-read typography, and a layout that makes information easy to take in. People should immediately understand what you are promoting, otherwise their brain shuts off and they move on to the next thing.
