Benefits of a Guide

I was inspired to become a professional guide after hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I’ve had years of exploring in the backcountry, but had not done many guided tours at that time. Our guides were incredible with the immense amount of knowledge they shared with us. By the time we even got to Machu Picchu, we had a vast knowledge about the Incas and their culture. Our guides were experts and highly educated. This continues to inspire me as I operate Uplift Adventures.

I find the impression and knowledge of a guide really varies amongst people. This may be due to it really varying within the industry itself. Some areas require guides to be certified and some do not, some forms of recreation require it and some do not. However, what are the benefits of a professional guide, someone who is accredited, and how do you find a guide who resembles the guides I had on the Inca Trail?

The benefits of hiring a professional guide when going on an adventure can really enhance your experience.

Safety: A guide may have years of training and mentorship. Our backcountry guides are certified to the highest level of training in North America for safety with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. This certification takes several years of courses, exams and mentorship.

Expert Knowledge: A guide’s role is to help interpret the natural world and the local culture. Our guides come with different backgrounds, but several have university degrees in environmental studies or history, and are passionate about learning.

Conservation: Guides should be aware of how to leave-no-trace, and the impact they have on their environment. They understand the rules and have strict guidelines to follow. Often, guiding companies advocate for environmental stewardship and protection on the land.

Professionalism: A guide plans the trip’s logistics so that you don’t waste your time. They can give recommendations on other trip itineraries or even help you plan it. They can also customize your adventure based on your interests, experience, and physical ability.

When you book with a local guide, you are supporting the local economy. To help you find the guide who best fits your trip plans, we recommend going to their website to read their About Us section and read their reviews online. We hope this helps you plan your next adventure. Make sure to check out our website for adventures in the Crowsnest Pass! We look forward to seeing you!
