Seasonal Depression

Seasonal change is here, and it will affect us all in different ways. Some of us thrive, and some of us feel run down and stressed out. When it comes to the winter blues, and seasonal attunements, acupuncture can help.

Depression is viewed a bit differently from a Chinese medicine perspective and can have many different reasons, but overall, it’s an interruption of free flow in the natural rhythms of our body and mind. It’s important to address the roots of what is causing any blocks in our life, but helping to restore free flow can bring tremendous relief from our overwhelming thoughts and overall tension so we have a little more space to just be.

Imagine a stream bubbling along; everything is smooth and clear and full of content fish as it winds its way along its path. If that free flow encounters an obstacle, there will be an interruption of the flow. Above the obstacle, pressure builds up and the fish swim frantically but don’t get anywhere (frustration and anger). Below the blockage there is less flow, and not enough pressure to move the fish (defeat and sadness). This is a simplistic story but explains how an interruption in flow can cause discomfort in different ways.

By addressing the obstacles in our “streams” and working to restore free flow with acupuncture, we can often find relief from some symptoms of depression and frustration. By reading the physical symptoms and signs, a personal treatment is created to help soothe what causes us pain and discomfort.

Acupuncture is an easy and low-risk tool for helping to relieve these blockages that can affect our physical and mental comfort. It can be safely added to existing treatments or used on its own. Most people leave feeling very calm and settled, often with a slight feeling of euphoria.

Life is hard, acupuncture helps.
